The New Seamless3d Forum Announcement

For those who don’t already know, your free to post on the new Seamless3d forum: www.seamless3d.com/forum

The new forum began as a minimalist idea just to allow public posting but now supports many features including threads, smileys, jpeg upload (big time saver), avatars, edit and rating. And posts can be easily shared on Facebook, Twitter, MySpace etc. In features I find useful, it surpasses the old forum yet unlike the old forum it has NOT grown into a horribly complicated bloated inefficient monster that was a nightmare to maintain. Thanks to my brother Steve who coded the new forum, newcomers are no longer scared away by awkward obstacles. You don't need to register an account in order to post messages. The new forum uses Gravatar (www.gravatar.com) for avatars so if you already have a Gravatar registered for another forum, you only need to supply your email address for the same avatar to show on the Seamless3d forum :)

Although the new forum uses the same web address to get to the main page, the old forum’s index can still be accessed by: www.seamless3d.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=1

And all old links to old posts still work and are accessible by Google.

Please feel free to post and have your say on the new forum :)

Everyone is free to continue to use it for posting for the time being but a brand new forum will soon replace it for new posts which will be simpler, faster and less frustrating not only to maintain but to post to too :)

        Problems with the Seamless3d Forum

The Seamless3d forum has lost recent posts going back to October. It would seem it has some how been restored to an earlier date but I have decided to no longer use this forum as phpBBs seem way too complicated and prone to too many problems. There are now many alternative services being used that offer simular services such as youtube twitter and of course this RSS feed. If you have an RSS feed that you use for showing your seamless3d related work, please email me your RSS link and I will be happy to subscribe to your feed and add the link to the seamless3d links page.

Using real time video as a guide has proven itself in my lip synching animations.
Much of the work in synchronizing my avatar to a real life video of myself speaking involved a lot of work going back and forth from a video player to seamless and
        manually calculating points in time.
By making it so that the video can play inside seamless the synchronization of the video to the Anim bar is taken care of by
        Seamless3d.

This tutorial marks a milestone in seamless's development because it along with the Modeling a Face From a Pre-Stitched NURBS Patch Structure and the Beginners NURBS Control Point Animation Tutorials shows how anyone can now easily make a sophisticated seamless animated avatar from basic shapes.

Nurbs Stitching & NSPE Refined and New Mirror System for NurbsPatches for 2.164

In previous versions you had to insert an ExitBuild in front of the JoinVertex nodes when performing NSPE (Nurbs Surface Poly Editing) but 2.164 allows you to perform NSPE while leaving JoinVertex nodes active. NSPE has been made more robust and Stem nodes can now store polymaps locally so no extra part nodes are needed for storing polymaps. NurbsPatches now use a mirror system that utilizes the left and right prefixes in the patch node names.

        Nurbs Patch Stitching

To keep everyone in touch with where I am at, I have been busy making seamless a lot easier and faster to stitch nurbs patches together. At least another weeks development is needed before I can start writing a tutorial on how to stitch patches together but I hope to have an example of a face people can play with in time for the next weekend. The following screen shot shows a head made out of 16 nurbs patches: <IMG border="0" src="http://www.seamless3d.com/img/100529-stitched-head.png" alt="my image"/>
16 may sound like a lot of patches but once the patches are stitched together an infinite number of shapes can be made by simply dragging the control points. I did attempt this idea in 2008 using fused nurbs patches but there were problems if the user dragged points where the patches were fused and there would have been problems animating control points where the patches were fused together. With stitching the user is free to drag all of the control points without any of the points needing special technical skills.

Neoreina is an established artist on YouTube with many uploads of her cartoon drawings that will soon reach 6 million views !
Only recently she has been learning how to use seamless3d.
Neoreina says it was difficult at first and that it took her a few weeks before she could use seamless properly but she has demonstrated perseverance gets results.
It is important to note too that Neoreina has had no help from me apart from the tutorials that were already on the seamless3d site.
I am delighted to hear Neoreina wants to continue advancing her skills using seamless.

hermetic_cab's birthday party will be in techuelife island on Sunday, 13 December 2009 at 20:00:00

Just download the latest version of the modeller (download size is less than flash)

Click the "open smls from the web" button
<IMG border="0" src="http://www.seamless3d.com/chat/toolbar.png" alt="my image"/>
, add your nickname, click on the worldList checkBox and then click on the techuelife island link that will appear.

Tip: don't click just under the edit line in the chat box to avoid crashing. I fixed this bug months ago thanks to nontiti isolating the condition but the fixed version is not online yet due to other developments.

All are welcome, look forward to seeing you :)

        Important bug fix for 2.155

I have Fixed the bug for 2.155 which is now ready for download.
The problem was caused by the wrong amount of pixels getting allocated for a 2d window.
It was not a new minor bug added, but an old low level bug brought to the surface.
I am now very hopeful this bug was behind the crashes that could occur after resizing a 2d window and who knows what else.

Shared TouchSensor Events, ColorEffect Animation, CopyPart transform & landOffset for 2.154

With the latest version of seamless3d, the train's start and stop buttons in techuelife island will now be shared in seamless chat and now the buttons change color too.

scale, rotation, and translation fields have been added to the CopyPart node, this makes it possible to add all the leaves to a tree from a single leaf using just a few lines of script and a single CopyPart node.

I have added a landOffset field to allow the user to adjust the height of the avatar. This field gets saved so you do not have to keep resetting it each time you log into a world.

Made all named ToushSensors shared events in seamless chat

I decided to make all TimeSensor's that are named (so they have an ID) shared when in seamless chat mode.
So today I added a new TOUCH_SENSOR command to the seamless server protocol.
Implementing this proved very simple, just a few lines of code were added to the server and client.
At least 90% of the time all a user wants is their TouchSensors shared when they want shared events so this should greatly simplify adding shared events most of the time compared to how this had to be done for Blaxxun.

        Added Start/Accerlate/Decelerate/Stop Train Script

Yesterday I had a chance to do some more work on Techuelife Island. I began work on the train's start/acceleration/deceleration/stop script and late in the night I uploaded this new script so the train is no longer a static object.
Some issues have surfaced. The red and green boxes don't change color to indicate the state of the train so I need to make it so a Seamless node can animate color.
Also the switch is not shared so I have been giving much thought recently on how best to implement shared events.
